MONDO CANE

"All the scenes you will see in this film are true. If they are shocking, it is only because there are many shocking things in this world..."

With those words, Directors Gualtiero Jacopetti, Paolo Cavara and Franco Prosperi unleashed the international sensation that stunned critics and moviegoers alike while revolutionizing the documentary genre forever. Filmed in every corner of the world, this landmark epic explores the culture of life and death, the anguish of man and beast, and the taboos of sex and religion, all amidst the barbarism of civilization gone insane. Sometimes beautiful, often horrifying yet always surprising, it remains one of the most disturbing and controversial films of our time. This is the original 'Shockumentary' that started it all. This is MONDO CANE.

MONDO CANE (Italian for "Dog's World") also features a brilliant score by Nino Oliviero and Riz Ortolani that includes the Oscar nominated theme song "More." Blue Underground has painstakingly restored this historic feature from original Italian vault materials untouched for over four decades, and then added an extraordinary collection of all-new and never-before-seen Extras for the absolute ultimate in MONDO-mania!

Personally I didn't find it sickening at all. I found it brilliant.
A stunning master-work of juxtaposed cultures. A montage of things mundane and bizarre, lovingly assembled to highlight the similarities of all mankind. From high rise shopping stores, to stone age New Guinea, Japanese bath houses, to underwater Malay cemeteries. The PLUMAGE might change, but the purpose does not! Life, death, and everything in between. Its a very thought provoking film. I had to step back and throw a fizzball into a hot tub of water and light some incense, and immerse myself into the fragrant steam cloud that rose above my bathtub, and soak for about an hour in order to re ground myself in modern day civilization. HAH! what a wonderful and varied species is man. So much that we, though separated by miles and culture and faiths, have in common. And the glaring differences. From catholics to cargo cults. It's a glorious tapestry and this film does its best to show us some of the vibrant threads that make up that indescribable web that is all of us, all the time. I highly recommend this film. You are the point of it after all. We all are.

SMITHEREENS

From SUSAN SEIDELMAN, Director of DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN And SEX AND THE CITY
Filmmaker Susan Seidelman rocked the movie industry with this daring and quirky story of Wren (Susan Berman), a self-promoting Jersey girl desperate to break into the downtown Manhattan music scene. But with no money and no talent, she bounces between a nice guy artist (Brad Rinn) who lives in his van and an arrogant musician (Punk icon Richard Hell) who lives off of anyone who will let him.

SMITHEREENS - which also marked the debut of Oscar-nominated screenwriter Ron Nyswaner (PHILADELPHIA) and features a score by beloved cult band The Feelies - remains a remarkable time capsule of the early 80s East Village scene and made history as the first American independent film invited to compete for the Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Yup. We've all met Wren. A blind dreamer without a pot to piss in, surviving on the goodness of others, of whose sacrifices on her behalf she is completely oblivious to. Always looking to trade up on a moments notice, bye thanks, been fun, gotta jet, plans you know? something came up, anyways I gotta split. She's basically a level below hipster, a new low, a wanna-be hipster I guess. A winner right? This film is her story. She insinuates herself into the lives of a few people who are at a loss as to what to do with/about this wacky chick. She just wants to sign autographs and eat tacos by the pool. Her words. Yet she doesn't seem to have reason why anyone would care for her company, much less her autograph. She's basically a fame seeker and a wanna be entourage member to anyone. She sucks and its fun to watch her descent into her just rewards. Kinda a cool movie. Very

DEAD & BURIED

The Creators Of ALIEN Bring A New Terror To Earth

Something very strange is happening in the quiet coastal village of Potters Bluff, where tourists and transients are warmly welcomed... then brutally murdered. But even more shocking is when these slain strangers suddenly reappear as normal, friendly citizens around town. Now the local sheriff (James Farentino of THE FINAL COUNTDOWN) and an eccentric mortician (Oscar winner Jack Albertson in his final feature film appearance) must uncover the horrific secret of a community where some terrifying traditions are alive and well... and no one is ever really DEAD & BURIED.

Robert Englund (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) co-stars in this genuinely chilling horror hit written by Ronald Shusett and Dan O'Bannon (ALIEN), directed by Gary A. Sherman (RAW MEAT), and featuring ultra-grisly gore effects by Oscar winner Stan Winston (ALIENS, TERMINATOR 2). DEAD & BURIED is now presented in eye-popping High Definition, completely uncut and uncensored, and loaded with revealing Extras.

Ahhhh! Nothing like a nice cup of piping hot Aztec Hot Chocolate and a modern story of reanimating the dead on a mid November evening. This movie brings you in slowly, murder is just the beginning, you see. The rest, well, lets just say there's really more to it than I was able to suss out until the end. Poor Sheriff Dan. Has the perfect wife, the badge in a small town, lots of friends and charming local neighbors. There's Old Dobs the Coroner/Mortician with a penchant for trying to twist as much cash out of the county as he can for his work. There are photographers, hitch hikers, and waitresses, gas guys, doctors, fishermen, housewives, and they all have one thing in common. Aside from living in the same town that it is. Or on second thought, strike "living" from that last sentence and insert "being in" and maybe a picture will begin to form in your mind of where this film inevitably ended up going. I enjoyed it. Tons of character actors from a wide range of films, and alot of foggy nights, and a dash of morticians wax for the occasional touch up, and you're ready for Dead & Buried.

THE PROWLER

If you think you're safe, you're DEAD wrong!
Avalon Bay, 1945: On the night of her graduation dance, young Rosemary and her date are brutally murdered by a prowler thought to be a jilted soldier home from the war. The killer was never found. 30 years later, the dance is held again for the first time since that horrific evening - but something else may have also returned Tonight, the teens of this sleepy town will meet their grisly ends at the hands - and pitchfork, blade and more - of THE PROWLER!

Also known as ROSEMARYS KILLER, this gruesome shocker is one of the cruelest body-count movies of the 80s, thanks to razor-sharp direction by Joseph Zito (FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER) and graphic gore effects by Tom Savini (DAWN OF THE DEAD, MANIAC). Hollywood legends Farley Granger (STRANGERS ON A TRAIN) and Lawrence Tierney (RESERVOIR DOGS) star in this rarely seen sleeper from the golden age of slasher films - now presented completely uncut and uncensored!

"Intense And Suspenseful! One Of The Better Slasher Bloodbaths!"
-Creature Features Movie Guide

Total slasher flick from start to finish. If youre into "No, dont go into the dark hallway alone" and "Dont open that door" moment's then this flick is right up your alley.

Plot wise, it had me guessing right up to the end, which is nice. Neatly tied off, with just a little mental work to get an idea of the "why". Well done gore effects, but we can expect nothing less than a master like Mr Savini. I especially enjoyed the use of the pitchfork as weapon in this one. Lots of chills, and thrills, it must have knocked em dead at the drive in back in the day. All in all, a classic example of the genre of slasher flicks.

BARE BEHIND BARS

Behind Bars No One Can Hear You Scream!
In a women's penitentiary where brutal beatings, steamy showers, and full cavity searches are the order of the day, the cons are turning into pros - and the cemetery is running out of room! To stay out of the torture chamber, the inmates can barter their bodies in the wicked warden's white slave trade, or submit to the nympho nurse's peculiar brand of medical malpractice. But when these lawless lovelies go on the lam to wreak vengeance on straight society, no one will be safe!

Prolific purveyor of perversion Oswaldo De Oliveira's (AMAZON JAIL) piece de resistance is presented here in its X-Rated entirety. A cornucopia of comely convicts (including International beauty queen Marta Anderson of MASSACRE IN DINOSAUR VALLEY and PERVERSION Scream Queen Nadia Destro) bare it all, as every frame of vicious violence, savage sexuality, and inappropriate use of pineapples, is presented pristine and intact for the first time ever in America!

-Scott Weinberg, EFilmCritic.com

"Sleazy But Fun Exploitation Movie!"
-Sex Gore Mutants

So THATS what goes in on Brazilian Womens Prisons! I was wondering. Well, in this film the inmates run around the yard in makeshift "gowns" or thigh length button up shirt dress thingys and play soccer. Until someone gets shanked! Then the mean guards whose uniform code seems to dictate that shirts be unbuttoned and bra's are a big no no, turn the fire hose on 'em! Take that you dirty dastardly criminal women! Its a fun movie, in its way, with a Nurse who seems to enjoy a snort of ether a bit too often to maintain a healthy IQ, a warden who augments her state salary by selling off the occasional inmate as a slave, and whole lively crew of inmates who seem to have nothing better to do than have crazy amounts of sex and plot escape attempts. The above quoted "inappropriate use of pineapples" got my attention. becasue those things are pointy and have sharp skins! Sp let me reasure you, the pineapple is carved into a more managable shape. Still and all, this film is rated x, and while it isnt out and out porn, it does indeed cross that line from time to time, but (amazingly) always in service to the plot and story. A trio of the inmates escape during a carnivale Mass, and end up dancing thier way down the streets staight into trouble. This is the part where i flinched. yeah. This movie made me flinch, and caused my roomie (an english professor) to yell "WHAT THE FUCK DID SHE FEED TO THAT DOG!?!?!?" This trio of inmates is free, and boy, do they have alot of pent up anger to work out. All in all, an entertaining movie, if you like soapy shower scenes, the occasional murder, and about a square mile of T & A.

Yes! I love it when groups of upper crust socialites attend missions to the cannibal infested jungle to rescue a (now grown up) kidnapped daughter of a scientist and treat it as a sort of yacht party entertainment, complete with on board drinks and hi-fi stereo sounds. Of course, the scientis/father is well aware of the gravity of the situation, having only narowly escaped with his life years before. In fact, he left his left arm behind as well. AND his wife (munched upon, yet whose remains are still worshipped to this day as "White Goddess number one")as well as his toddler daughter. Now the daughter has been raised by the scary face painted cannibals (who through some miracle of genetics appear to be very mutli cultural in ethnicity) to be their living goddess. Not a bad gig for her. She marries into the tribe pretty well, and does goddess stuff for them, with only vague memories of life before. However, when confronted with her newly recaptured pops, she begins to flash back to days of pink dresses and ponies, and decides to allow him to escape. Daddy and the surviving socialite dash through the jungle and circle back to re-kidnap the girl. Of course she isnt in the frame of mind to give up goddesshood, husband etc, and Daddy has to knock her out and carry her out of the jungles. One armed mind you. Until the chilling conclusion when the enraged cannibals catch up to them at the banks of a river and the climactic mano a mano fight for the ownership of the girl ensues. It's lavish.

Take your left arm and bend it at the elbow reaching for your own armpit, now tie it that way with string or something, put on a white t shirt and go frolic in a river for a while and you will get an idea of the level of brilliant cinematography required to not sow the "amputated and eaten" arm in a river fight scene.

Jess Franco is a master. This movie makes me feel like I can go rush right out and make a film too. Just get 30 friends, a botanical garden (as the jungle) plenty of raw steak and add a g-string wearing cannibal white girl (who had a bikini tan line framing her ass, I might ad) and you will be right there with me screaming "Achtung!" (yes I know its German, dont ask me why the cannibals screamed it) and together we, too, shall walk the red carpets and bask in the glory of a bigtime premier. WHOSE WITH ME?!?!??!?!?!

MADE IN BRITAIN

A Film By Alan Clarke - Music By The Exploited
Academy Award nominee Tim Roth (RESERVOIR DOGS, PULP FICTION) made his unforgettable film debut as Trevor, a ferocious teenage skinhead whose random acts of racism, vandalism and violence send him on a snarling spiral through England's justice system. This is the unsparing portrait of youth fueled by rage and hate prowling an empire ruled by repression and despair. It remains a shattering cinematic experience that could only be MADE IN BRITAIN.

This uncompromising classic directed by Alan Clarke (SCUM) from a searing screenplay by David Leland (MONA LISA, WISH YOU WERE HERE) features gritty cinematography by two-time Oscar winner Chris Menges (THE MISSION, THE KILLING FIELDS) with music by anarchist icons The Exploited.

THE FIRM / ELEPHANT

"The greatest British filmmaker of his generation."
His vision exposed a real world of raw life like no others. His career inspired a group of actors, writers and directors that changed movies forever. In these two acclaimed dramas from the late Alan Clarke, experience the unsparing work of the director The London Observer still calls "the greatest British filmmaker of his generation."

THE FIRM
Gary Oldman (SID & NANCY, JFK) gives a blistering performance as Bex Bissell, a middle-class family man who also leads a violent gang of soccer hooligans. Philip Davis (VERA DRAKE) co-stars in this scorching drama directed by Clarke that critics have called a modern-day A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.

ELEPHANT
In the film that The Village Voice hails as "Clarke's masterpiece" and would become the direct inspiration for Gus Van Sant's award-winning movie of the same name, Clarke and producer Danny Boyle (TRAINSPOTTING, 28 DAYS LATER) explore the political violence of Northern Ireland via the stark and brutal depiction of eighteen separatist murders.

The Firm was not what I was expecting, vis a lot of senseless sports fans beating on one another. Rather it was actually quite touching in its way, with Gary Oldman doing a wonderful job playing the role of Bex, a father, a real estate agent and football hooligan. Yessss. Seems there is an England vs German match comin up in Berlin and Bex wants to put together a sort of rough and tumble field trip to go and see it. A "National Firm" of supporters if you will. Only problem is that the top dog spot of this firm of hooligans is hotly contested by rival fans of a different club. Madness and general "we are tougher and more bad ass than you" one up's manship begins, and doesnt stop. In fact it crosses the line and keeps on going until the groups DO in fact join up, over a rather tragic "bonding experience" that strips away the local differences and unites them behind one cause, the cause of Bex, and England.
Gary Oldman. right? nuff said.

OK. this disc also contains a short film called simply "Elephant". and I have to say its one of the most bleak, brilliant, things I've ever seen. It's got a very very deep message and a wicked way of getting it across. There is almost zero dialogue, which coupled with some of the longest shots I've seen really brings home what Alan Clarke is trying to say. It's so simple. 18 murders. Nothing to tie them together. really, not visually anyway. 18. It's like a montage almost. One after another. Calm. Business like. nothing to link the killers, nothing to link the vic's. It really is quite amazing. ELEPHANT is way worth a watch. It's one of those movies that will stay with you for a while. And I doubt you'll ever get another chance to see anything quite like it.

SALON KITTY

Tinto Brass' Never-Before-Seen Uncensored Director's Cut!
Berlin, 1939: At the dawn of World War II, power-mad SS Officer Wallenberg (Helmut Berger of THE DAMNED) is ordered to find and train Germany's most beautiful women to work in the opulent brothel of Madam Kitty (Ingrid Thulin of CRIES AND WHISPERS). Here these Nazi nymphs will submit to the bizarre passions and carnal degradations of the Reich's highest-ranking men and women while Wallenberg secretly records their acts for blackmail. But when an innocent young prostitute (Teresa Ann Savoy of CALIGULA) uncovers the conspiracy, her revenge will ignite a holocaust of pain, pleasure and shocking sexual perversion. The story is true. The depravity is real. The film is SALON KITTY.

John Steiner (MANNAJA), Tina Aumont (TORSO) and John Ireland (RED RIVER) co-star in this infamous epic co-written and directed by Tinto Brass and featuring exquisite production design by Oscar winner Ken Adam (BARRY LYNDON, GOLDFINGER). Released in America as the heavily censored MADAM KITTY, this controversial shocker has been fully restored from the director's own personal vault print and features extended scenes of sexual atrocities.

"Scenes That Might Make A Porn Star Wince!"
-Playboy Magazine

Nazi hookers. SS Nazi Spy Hookers. Basically the story of a young womans disillusionment with the National Socialist Party near the begining of World War Two. Its a liitle Nazi plot ya see. Set up an established madame in a remote spot, load her down with a bunch of propaganda spouting nazi females willing to do all for the reich and then put bugs in all the rooms. Did i spell reich properly? Sposed to last forever and nowadays its difficult to remember how to spell it. Such is the way of things. Anyways, The girls basically write a report and send it off to the boss after each date. This is compared to audio recordings by the nazi's who have set this whole thing up. And of course take action agaisnt those who do not whisper sweet nothings of loyalty and the greatness of herr Adolph whilst taking thier R & R. Of course she falls in love with him. Of course he wants to defect, Of course he gets caught. Leaving us with one pissed off EX nazi spy hooker who is out for a little payback. And some of the stuff in this movie! Man! See, Each recruit is tested for Im not sure what to call it, inhibitions? enthusiasms? the-willingness-to-do-anything-for-der-party? You get the idea. The girls that pass the often um creative tests are made full fledged nazi hookers. The ones who balk or dont show proper "Oh GOD IM SO LOVING THIS" faces get sent off to the re education camps.
This movie predates Caligula, and is (as noted above) restored from the original from Mr. Brass' private collection. Its sexploitation on an epic scale set to the campy rowdiness of a late 30's high class brothel, yet serious as a heart attack and a midnight visit from the Gestapo. There is something in this movie. It's more than titties and swastikas. It's almost a coming of age movie. like 16 CANDLES in a nazi whore house.

COMPANEROS

Fate brought them together... Greed made them inseparable... Violence made them COMPANEROS!
Yodlaf Peterson (Franco Nero of KEOMA) is a suave Swedish arms dealer with a love for fast money. Vasco (Tomas Milian of TRAFFIC) is a trigger-happy Mexican bandit with a hate for suave Swedish arms dealers. But when the two team up to kidnap a professor who holds the key to a fortune in gold, they find themselves hunted by the American army, stalked by a marijuana-crazed sadist (Academy Award winner Jack Palance) and trapped in the middle of a revolution about to explode. Can these two enemies blast their way across Mexico together without killing each other first?

Written and directed by the legendary Sergio Corbucci (DJANGO), COMPANEROS is a once-in-a-lifetime teaming of the two greatest European stars in 'Spaghetti Western' history. Fernando Rey (THE FRENCH CONNECTION) co-stars in this action-packed comedy classic that also features a remarkable score by Ennio Morricone (THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY).

There isn't anything quite like watching Jack Palance blazing joints during gun fights. Ya know? An awful lot of joints. In fact, he is given a leather wallet full of doobies as a down payment to go kill the hero's of this classic western. So, roach clip in hand, with his trusty falcon "Marcia", who once saved his life in Cuba, he hunts for Vasco and The Penguin. Confused yet? Its really not that convoluted. You see, Vasco is recruited by a revolutionary 'General' who claims to have his eyes on the presidency of Mexico. Vasco sets out as a fanatical soldado for the cause on a mission to Yuma to bust another, competing, candidate for the top spot. Along with a Swedish arms dealer, they dodge the real army, both Mexicano and Americano, the group of stoner led assassins, and often each other, AND the young idealists who follow the man they are going to get. With the help of a band of whores they are able to bust this man out of the fort where he is held captive and flee back to Mexico. Along the way Vasco realizes he's pretty much been a douche bag the whole movie and slowly changes his stripe to be a follower of the 'Professor' whom he has just busted out of jail. The Swede is just in it for the money, and he is ambivalent as to who pays, so its all good to him. Meanwhile the gorgeous Lola (Iris Berben) leads the followers of the Professor and captures Vasco's heart. Well, as you can imagine madness ensues when they return to San Bernardino, that includes a wicked machine gun scene, machetes, a wedding, a bank vault full of symbolism, and the theft of a church relic. Oh yeah. And more doobies being smoked. Cause Jack's not done yet! They never played this one on TV when i was a kid. And you gotta give props to Jack Palance for actually looking stoned during his scenes. Franco and Tomas are always superlative character & lead actors, and they nail this movie shut like the coffin they used to slip the prof past the border guards in. When the smoke all clears, pun intended, I have to say this one was pretty darn good. It's not often you see this level of creativity in a western. Certainly not these days! ADIOS!

"One Of The Most Notorious Exploitation Films Ever Made!"
-Bizarre Magazine

Ok! Let me start by sayiing that this movie is not for family viewing.
It starts off like you'd think, and moves along with the incredibly gorgeous
Laura Gemser going undercover under the covers, as it were, to get photos for use in her profession as a photo-journalist for a New York news magazine. She manages to defy an assassination attempt with an impromptu blowjob to show the would be killer that sex isnt so bad, and the sins of the world can be fun and worth trying out. He quickly agrees and flees with abig grin on his somewhat shocked face. Emanuelle knows a repressed man when she sees one! Campy antics get our sultry hedonistic investigator a position in the harem of a local wealthy bad guy who collects women according to the signs of the zodiac, where as "Virgo" she completes the set and meanders around snapping photos with a camera James Bond would be proud to have used.
Once she has her evidence, she makes good her escape, and finds herself in Venice in the casstle of an aristocrat who seems to be in the business of selling forged art works to other high end scum. Oh, and he throws one hell of a party. I gave a little start at this point as the films "graphic sexual content" began to make itself manifest in the most graphic ways possible! Soft core this is not! Well, Emanuelle gets wind of some other questionable shenanigans on the other side of the world and so must be off to get her photos! Ciao, Venice! And enter the blood and gore portion of this odd, disturbing, flick. Seems Emanuelle is after the producers of some snuff films. I got a bit skeezed out during this part, and found myself cringeing and looking away. For 1976, those are some realistic effects. There is more than one kind of impalement shown in this film. HA and there is a scene with a Horse named Pedro. I was pretty much "no way will they show...oh shit! They Do they do!" This one is unrated folks, but that doesnt mean you can get it at the local rental spot. 1976!

At any rate, this entire series is notorious for setting the standard internationally for exploitation films. And they were not above the "mash-up" with whatever was big at the time. Thus be prepared a unique experience when you go watch this gem in the crown of Laura Gemser and Joe D'Amato - EMANUELLE IN AMERICA
brought to you by the legendary Blue Underground.

THE STENDHAL SYNDROME

DARIO ARGENTO'S Masterpiece Of Terror - Completely Uncut And Uncensored!
When beautiful police detective Anna Manni (Asia Argento) follows the bloody trail of a sophisticated serial murderer/rapist through the streets of Italy, the young woman falls victim to the bizarre "Stendhal Syndrome" - a hallucinatory phenomenon which causes her to lose her mind and memory in the presence of powerful works of art. Trapped in this twilight realm, Anna plunges deeper and deeper into sexual psychosis, until she comes to know the killer's madness more intimately than she ever imagined.

Horror maestro Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA, OPERA) reaches new heights of florid fantasy and Grand Guignol with this warped work of art starring Maxim Magazine's "Sexiest Woman in the World" Asia Argento (LAND OF THE DEAD, XXX), Thomas Kretschmann (KING KONG, BLADE II) and Marco Leonardi (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN 3). Previously edited outside of Italy, THE STENDHAL SYNDROME is now presented here in stunning High Definition, transferred under the supervision of cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno (ALL THAT JAZZ, AMARCORD) from the original Italian 35mm interpositive, and loaded with exclusive Extras.

NOTES AND REVIEWS

"Argento's Most Disturbing Work To Date!"
-Eccentric Cinema

"A CLASSIC AND A MASTERPIECE... An Engaging Piece Of Filmmaking That Alternates Between The Harrowing And The Beautiful!"

"A Somber, Brutal, And Nightmarish Film That Begs To Be Considered As A Serious Work Of Art!"

Simply put, this movie is a must have. If you are a fan of Dario, or Asia Argento and you haven't added this one to your collection, then you, my friend, are being deeply remiss. These two cult icons should need no introductions to anyone reading these humble reviews, and yet, I can't pass up the opportunity to lavish praise on this stunning effort byt eh legendary family Argento. Chills? oh yes. Hallucinations? Oh yes. Asia getting sliced with razor blades whilst strapped to a filthy mattress? But of course! And lets not forget the art. This movie will have (and probably has HAD) art students quietly, slipping off to libraries to look up the Stendhal Syndrome to see how they too can get IT. Not that you'd reallllly want to have it, but some of us art students really get a kick out of shit like that.
We DO try to influence people after a fashion after all. But i digress.

The Stendhal Syndrome has received the most loving attention to detail by Blue Underground, to bring you the definitive Blu Ray. Viola. Wait no longer.

Look over Asia's shoulder as she hunts up and down Italy for a rapist, who quickly flips the table's and begins hunting up and down Italy for HER. Does he find her? oh yes. Is he victorious? Is she? What, in fact, happens? Well, facts can be tricky when you are under the influence of THE STENDHAL SYNDROME. So I'm not telling. BUT I will say this. If you are having a Blue Underground nite and decide to watch this one, and you happen to know me, and called to say "hey, come over Im gonna watch Stendhal." I'd be on the way before you could say "bring Munchies."

It's sexy, it's tricky, its Argento.

"CROWD PLEASING ACTION... Castellari's Direction Lends An Amphetamine-Laced Touch!"
-All Movie Guide

The story of a man who is brutalized in a hold up at a post office, and takes matters into his own hands when the police prove to be less than able to provide him with justice. Franco Nero is really just a fantastic actor. He completely captures the humiliation and rage and it isnt supposed to be pretty, or attractive. Its supposed to look wild, desperate, and just a tad out of control. OK so maybe a whole lot of out of control. But SHIT, whats a regular guy supposed to do? Just keep taking it? Not Franco. No, he goes to the library. Thats right. so Bad Guys WATCH OUT. Because Carlo (the character Franco plays) is hunting for an IN to the world of the criminal. And he plans to follow that lead all the way to the promised land. Of course, we all know that little things often pop up when we try to stick to a plan. Hey! It ain't easy stalking small time hoods through the street, especially when you have about as much street smarts as, well, as much as Carlo has, which isn't much. Carlo is in for a wild ride for sure, but he just HAS to. So he will certainly find a way. You know what I'm talking about.

Great flick, fun and cool. The action is great and the opening montage of various crimes and shenanigans is very eye catching. Once again, the stunts in this vintage classic actually cause me to cringe, as I watch them. Those dudes were tough! Complete with a Bond Girl, to give it a romantic edge, this movie delivered up a solid quality evenings entertainment!

DJANGO KILL...IF YOU LIVE, SHOOT!

SHOCKINGLY VIOLENT AND SURREAL... A MASTERPIECE OF THE GOTHIC WESTERN!
Tomas Milian (TRAFFIC, RUN MAN RUN) stars as a half-breed bandit double-crossed and left for dead who rises from the grave to seek his revenge. But when his quest leads to a bizarre town called The Unhappy Place, he is plunged into an odyssey of gruesome torture, graphic violence and relentless sexual depravity. This is the landmark movie that fans and critics still consider to be the strangest and most controversial Spaghetti Western ever made. This is DJANGO KILL!

Director Giulio Questi (DEATH LAID AN EGG) and co-writer/editor Franco Arcalli (co-writer of ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA and LAST TANGO IN PARIS) shocked the world with this hallucinatory tale of greed, corruption, perversion and beyond. Also known as SE SEI VIVO SPARA (IF YOU LIVE, SHOOT!), this definitive presentation of DJANGO KILL! has been created from original Italian negative materials with all of its infamous scenes of savagery and slaughter now fully restored for the first time ever in America.

"SHOCKINGLY VIOLENT AND SURREAL... A MASTERPIECE OF THE GOTHIC WESTERN!"
-Spaghetti Cinema

"SO EXTREME IN EVERY WAY - IT IS ONE OF THE HANDFUL OF GREAT ITALIAN WESTERNS!"
-Alex Cox, Director of Repo Man and Sid & Nancy

This one is a first for me. A Metaphysical Spaghetti Western. I like westerns and I enjoy odd things, and this is both! It seems that our bandit "hero" is double crossed along with all the Mexicans by the White guys in the gang. They are all shot at the edge of a mass grave they are forced at gunpoint to dig for themselves. Later a pair of Native Indios out for a stroll or something come upon the wounded(?) and left for dead (again with the (?) as its possible that he IS in fact back from the dead). The Indios nurse the fallen bandit back to health in exchange for the stories of what he saw while on the other side. "It is said there are many animals to hunt there...?" etc etc. Our Hero never gets around to answering these significant questions as he becomes embroiled in the tracking down of the men who left him for dead. Alas. He is to late, the White Guy Bandits, ended up in the wrong town and got strung up by the locals, with two townies stealing the gold for themselves. Our Hero/Anti-Hero does not despair. He simply hangs out until the town itself explodes into violence over the gold. With everything from mystical Indios to a perverted Alderman who keeps his "insane" wife locked up in a room, this movie has more drama and side plots than a bus full of jr high schoolers on the way home from school. It was an interesting movie, and I was surprised by it, to be sure, and I would recommend it to the devout Western fan, as a "Hey you think you've seen em all? Check THIS one out" sort of thing. Cool flick, GREAT surgery scenes, solid gold bullets, and a possible vengeful ghost, it's more a story they might have told IN the old west, than a film ABOUT the old west. very cool, off center, and not what youd expect!

ZOMBIE

Totally Uncut & Uncensored!
In Italy, it was considered the 'unofficial sequel' to DAWN OF THE DEAD. In England, it was known as ZOMBIE FLESH-EATERS and banned as obscene. Tisa Farrow (MANHATTAN), Richard Johnson (THE HAUNTING) and Ian McCulloch (CONTAMINATION) star in this worldwide splatter sensation directed by the Maestro Of Gore Lucio Fulci (CONTRABAND, CONQUEST, THE BEYOND) that remains one of the most eye-skewering, skin-ripping, gore-gushingly graphic horror hits of all time!

I watched this one with a date. We had alot of fun trying to second gues the plot as it moved along- eg "She is going to be the first one to get naked.", and "This guy is going to be the last one to get eaten by the zombies.", and the infamous "This character has my vote as the one who lives." Really I had no idea what to expect from this vintage bit of horror, and have to say that I enjoyed it! For its on sake, and not withstanding that i was on a date. The movie started great with an "abandonded" yacht blowing around adrift in NY harbor or some such (not form NY, so please excuse me if i got that wrong.) The boat is boarded by police and inspected. They, of course, are shocked beyond words to find themselves under attack by someone, who seems rather the worse for wear, and impervious to bullets, to boot!

One of the officers is killed, and ends up in the morgue. (ahem theres a bit of a give away for those of you familiar with the genre) An investigation is launched. The daughter of the owner of the boat shows up and teams up with a cop to find out just what the heck happened and where her pops is. The investigation, fraught with nocturnal creepings aboard the boat, lead our protagonists to a remote island which houses the hospital of a (YES) scientist / doctor. The Doctor explains what his relationship to her father is, and goes on to tell them a bit about the odd circumstances on the island. The daughter, investiogator, and the boat crew (whom they hired to get them to said island) basically spend the rest of the movie trying to not get eaten and to get back to the boat and make good an escape! duh. Obviously, the go through a harrowing chill filled jungle run and eventually...

well, go watch it yourself! I completely dug this movie and cant imganine the need of a barf bag, as is advertised in the trailer. It's a classic work of the Zombie tradition and zombie flick lovers will enjoy it with out a doubt!

"MORE BRUTAL AND BLOODTHIRSTY THAN THE FIRST ONE... Some Of The Most Effective Monsters Ever Put On Film!"

The remote Spanish town is celebrating the 500th anniversary of the death by auto de fe of the Knights Templar. Its quite a party! fireworks! booze! dancing! whoo hoo! everyones having a blast until, yes, until the EVIL DEAD Templars come rampaging thru the town on a quest for revenge to slake thier never ending quest for blood and mayhem! A small mismatched group of survivors of the initial slaughter end up barricaded in the town church, where amidst the, what you would think is the all consuming problem of how to escape the hell-spawn zombie knights, a bitter love triangle further separates our forlorn heros as they struggle to survive swords wielded by the uncaring dead, and each other!
A legendary film, from a legendary series dubbed "The Blind Dead" this movie is fun for the whole family, if that family happens to all be purveyors of gore and mayhem.
I am working my way with relish through the whoe series, enjoying everyomoment thus far of this milestone of the zombie horror genre. The snazzy box set comes in a coffin! And Trust me, thats quite the conversation piece amog all the guests to my home as it sits proudly atop the dvd rack. Something about the shambling of the knights is extremely disquieting, as oposed to the hell bent for leather fast as hell zombies so common in the films being made today. Shambling sword wielding dead guys, villiage idiots, hunky experts from out of town, and depraved towns women all come together in this vintage masterpiece of horror. enjoy!

The conductor refuses to stop the train to allow her boy to chase her, and so it continues to its destination hwere htey all disembark and begin asking the towns people about the area where she jumped off, so they can go search for her.

No one will tell them of the area, citing bad superstitions, and that no one goes there. EVER.

This is a great trashy "whodunnit" ! A pregnant fashion model dies on the abortion table, and is replaced in her home so it will appear a natural death. They obviously didn't have to worry about Grissom coming through the scene! Later, Carlo, a photographer with a somewhat randy disposition with regard to the casting couch and just nice looking ladies in general brings in a new prospective model to his agency, where we are introduced to the rest of the cast, all employees of the high end photo agency.

It's a great job for guys and girls alike, until someone begins killing the staff and talent!

Carlo and Magda, his young assistant photographer/lover begin to unravel the mystery together by showing up at a ransom drop that Magda overheard by hiding while the boss was on the phone with the mysterious blackmailer. Oh! The doctor that performed the autopsy was found dead before any of all this happened as well!
Im guessing its a revenge thing. A friend of the abortion bungled victim out avenging her friend. Yes HER friend, I'm still watching this one (as we speak) but im fairly certain the baddie is a woman! I AM REALLY ENJOYING THIS ONE. heh caps lock. but it fits so I will leave it!. Carlo hides out near the ransom drop and snaps photos of the exchange which turns into a MURDER of his boss! In any case, its full of high end fashion models doing all they can to secure that "big chance", perverted industry hangers-on, fur coats, (lets bring back fur coats you guys, even fake ones, or old vintage ones! they are just plain sexy) and stunning shocks and tantalizing clues that have left the police baffled. I highly recommend this one! its fun, campy, and a stimulating mystery. I am soooo hoping Carlo finds the bad guy and gets revenge for the murders of all his friends and co workers! As a photogrpaher, myself, I cant wait to run into an agency run along these lines! GOLLLLY! Fashion and photogrpaphy have come a really long way since the time of this film, but switchblades are apparently time-less!

The sick are taken to an old mine camp, and left to fend for themselves while they sicken and die. It seems that the plan is to wait until everyone ahs died of this illness, then re do the town as he sees fit. He is aided in this by a bevy of ex-confederate soldiers and local gunslingers, three of whom are Keoma's half-brothers. After paying a visit to his father, on the farm, beset with memories, Keoma resolves to free the town from the clutches of the evil ones. madness and gun fights ensue.

OK movie, not my favorite, but not the worst western I've seen either. The elements of the movie that worked for me the best were the quasi spiritual/familial motivations fo the main character. Raised in his fathers home with his three half-brothers, a young halfbreed Indian boy is taught about life and survival by his father, a family slave, and his half-brothers, who simply hated him on sight.

So this poor guy basically goes home to rest after a long war, and begins getting hassled before he's downed his first shot of whiskey in the town saloon. Bound to piss anyone off. But they are family too, dammit! So whats a crackshot half breed commando home from the war to do? Turn the other cheek perhaps? Join forces witht he cabal currently running things? If you said "hell no!" youd be right. Keoma starts by rescuing a pregnant widow, and attempting to get her something to drink. Which leads, oddly enough, to a few dead bodies scattered around the bar. There ARE some really cool shots in the film, one where he and his father are engaged in a bit of nostalgic target practice. The shot is from the INSIDE of a wooden barrel, and the scene comes into view ad bullet holes perforate the wooden slats allowing the camera to show the shooters. The second shot that i realy liked, occured at the onset of a gunfight where Keoma was explaining his offer of 4 cents payment for the medication to the blackmailing gunfighters, "the price of four bullets, you see.". The shot is from Keoma's POV, of his own hand holding four fingers up in the air, lowering a finger as he counts down. One, and a finger comes down, showing one of the gunfighters, who was hidden by the same finger while it was up, Two, same thing, finger comes down, and theres another bad guy right there. Same for three and four. Very well set up shot! I noticed that the costumes in this film were very very raggedy and filthy, as fitting for a down on its heals mining town. Which was nice, as I personally HATE it when you have a bunch of dust blowing round a clap board town and everyone is walking around immaculate with shiny shoes and bright white shirts, like the dirt just doesnt touch them. The old west was DIRTY dammit, and this movie shows that very well.
Its a good movie, just not my fav, is all, but RUN MAN RUN is going to be REALLY hard to beat as my spaghetti western chart topper. Check the www.blue-underground.com
site for all the trailers etc, and I hope you enjoyed this latest review!
thanx!

Contraband

Fabio Testi (REVOLVER) stars as Luca Di Angelo, an idealistic family man and cigarette smuggler in the treacherous Naples underworld. But when a rival gang massacres his brother and abducts his wife, Luca triggers a psychotic mob war that goes far beyond mere revenge.Get ready for a crime saga unlike anything you've ever seen before as director Lucio Fulci (ZOMBIE) unleashes the most gut-splattering, brain-blasting, flesh-frying scenes of cruelty and carnage imaginable. This is CONTRABAND!

Marcel Bozzufi (THE FRENCH CONNECTION) co-stars in this depraved shocker (also known as THE NAPLES CONNECTION and THE SMUGGLER) that most Fulci fans have only seen in censored versions. Blue Underground is now proud to present CONTRABAND fully restored from the original negative for the first time ever in America!

Lucio Fulci's CONTRABAND is a wild ride through the trials of a Naples smuggling ring
run by "Capo's". Things are going splendidly, until a dandified Frenchman moves into the area and begins wasting people in the ring in order to take over the distribution side of their organization for the new product he is bringing in. The dope. Needless to say, this irks our hero and his friends NO END, and they decide to go after the bastard as opposed to accepting his offer to join forces and let bygones be bygones. There are some really cool gore effects in this movie, but hey its a Fulci, so you knew that already. Fabio Testi has become one of my favorite actors, and he does a wonderful job as Luca, one of the Capo's. Things get out of hand for Luca, and at a rather cool twist ending, all the retired capo's (who we never see through out the film, save watching their TV sets) come out for one last show down, with this French upstart. Very cool. The younger generation was all killed, so the old guys put the remotes down and load the shotguns and set a brilliant ambush of the bad guys. Very cool movie, lots of action, some really cool shoot outs, and enough comedy to keep you smiling between the murders and mob killings.

Once again, Ive opted to let my room-mate get his 2 cents in ont hsi movie review, and well, i guess for an english teacher he just isnt very serious, but never the less, here is what he had to say...

Luca, an upstanding Capo and family man, uh, hmm, he, um, fuh, follows the footsteps
of Don Corleone in not wanting to deal in the drug trade. Despite the fact that his wife uh, yeah, gets a little roughed up, he refuses to buckle under pressure. Amidst all this chaos, his hair and shirts and sweater jackets are flawless, for this reason we can say that he made the right decision. Chock full of uh, ah, macabre and campy shootouts, CONTRABAND is a blood and guts melange, well suited for the connoisseur of, uh, of German broads getting their face burnt. Excellent pick.

Thanks BU for another one from the vaults!

Eugenie

The Legendary Erotic Classic...
Marie Liljedahl (the luscious star of INGA) is Eugenie, an innocent young woman taken to an island paradise where she is initiated into a world of pleasure and pain controlled by the sinister Dolmance (Christopher Lee). But when she surrenders to her own forbidden fantasies, Eugenie becomes trapped in a frenzy of drugs, sadomasochism and murder. Can a frightened girl in the grip of carnal perversion find sanctuary in the orgies of the depraved?

Jack Taylor (SUCCUBUS) and Maria Rohm (MARQUIS DE SADE'S JUSTINE) co-star in this legendary erotic classic from Jess Franco, the infamous director of VAMPYROS LESBOS and VENUS IN FURS. Based on the notorious novel PHILOSOPHY IN THE BOUDOIR by the Marquis de Sade, this rarely seen shocker is presented completely uncut, and remains one of the most controversial explorations of extreme sexuality in European cinema history.

OK! In this twisty little number a young girl is bartered by her father to a lascivious temptress in exchange for a night of carnal pleasure. The daughter thinks she is simply going off to visit a wiser lady friend on her remote island hideaway. Thus, she is stoked! WOW! A secret trip to an island paradise! This sure beats the convent school! Thus the stage is set. The sexy temptress shows darling Eugenie around and introduces her step brother, who is also on the island. They begin by having a nice lunch. Some music, some wine, OH did I mention that the wine was drugged? and Eugenie's sweet trusting nature taken advantage of by the step siblings? No? How foolish of me. For it seems that they are members of a bizarre sex-cult that revels in the works of the late Marquis de Sade! (big surprise!) And in fact, the entire trip has been scripted out by our sey blond seductress, down to the last cat o nine tails! HOWEVER, unbeknownst to her, a few script changes have been initiated by the dour cult leader, played by Christopher Lee. These changes leave dead bodies strewn throughout the mansion. What will poor little Eugenie do?

The movie is charming in its way. The decadent jet set, plucking whomsoever strikes thier fancy up and wisking them away to a torturous paradise. Smoldering looks abound with innocent laughter, as secret lsut meets headlong with youthfull innocence. The film has a grainy texture during the hallucinatory "dream" sequences, which actually made me smile (the texture, not the dream) as it served to further cloud the precision of the moment and give it that misty "hazed" look one gets when one has had one too many pulls on the opium pipe. Or so i have been told. In any case, the movie is fun and definetly worth a watch if you are a de Sade fan. yet another cult classic form Blue Underground!

hands down the best Spaghetti Western I've ever seen. Great acting by all the leads, often stunning camera work, and gorgeous panoramas. Well writen, extremely entertaining. There is alot going on in this movie. I'm not even going to try to get into it all. One scene that jumps out (and alot of them do!) is our erstwhile hero has been captured and is tied to one wing of a windmill out in the middle of nowhere. He is being tortured into giving up the location of the gold hoarded by the revolution as finance. The bad guy is smacking him in the face when the windmill arm he is on has rotated close to the ground, so its round round round SMACK round round round SMACK, and at some point they mounted a camera to the arm of the windmill so you get a CRAZY cool shot from his point of view as he spins around, and eventually he is able to work and arm free and latch on to the bad guys throat, so BOTH of them are now spinning around. Just stunning. I was vastly impressed with this one, Id watch this again. its a good one. And if you like weesterns, its simply a great one.

A poet living in an old building in New York is reading through an old book sold to her by the friendly neighborhood antique dealer. The books just by happenstance mentions the very building she resides in, and mentions it in connection with very ominous circumstances. Imagine? Well, the girls wastes no time in penning a letter to her brother in Rome, to inform him of this amazing chance. Remarkably, the book also mentions a similiar building that is in Rome! The multi-layered connections of INFERNO had me wondering just what this woman had stumbled inot before the first blood spatters hit the wall. And hit the wall they did. And the ceiling. With a tell tale trail of droplets or two, as well. It seems that the book is excerpts from a diary written by the architect of the residences, (of which there is a third building which does not enter into our story) And the architect seems to have met with a questionable death. Now the brother seems to hae left the letter his sister wrote in lecture hall, where it was picked up by his desk mate, who of course read it. Intrigued by the contents she directs her cabbie to take her to the Roman location, which turns out to be a library. She finds the book in question in the stacks, adn wanders the grounds of the strange library, finding an odd room full of bubbling cauldrons of some unspeakable substance. These are tended by a man who, upon seeing the book cluthced in her hands freaks out and asaults her for possession of it. The girl escapes and returns home, placing a call to the brother, saying "come quickly, i have news of your sisters letter". Or some such. Of course, our music student hero rushes right over, only to discover that the girl is already dead. He quickly books a flight to New York to go to the aid of his sister. Madness ensues. As you can expect from Dario Argento, this stroy revolves around a supernatural presence, which co-exists with mankind. and evolves as we gain clue after clue until the presence finally announces itself in a blaze of flames. There is one scene I really enjoyed and I have dubbed it "When Cats Attack" that involves a pack of cats, yep, attacking en masse. Classic old school horror from the acknowedged master of the craft.

The Heroin Busters

Sex, Violence And A Kickass Score By Goblin All Fully Restored For The First Time Ever In America!
Fabio Testi (THE BIG RACKET, CONTRABAND) stars as a cold-blooded cop gone deep undercover to take down an international drug syndicate. But when a hair-trigger Interpol agent (David Hemmings of BLOW-UP, DEEP RED and GLADIATOR fame) joins the investigation, the case takes a deadly detour into sexual depravity and sudden violence. Can two tough detectives trapped in a criminal underworld now stay alive long enough to ignite a citywide massacre?

Sherry Buchanan (ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST) co-stars in this action-packed thriller - with an unforgettable motorcycle and airplane chase climax - co-written and directed by Enzo Castellari (HIGH CRIME, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS), featuring a pounding score by legendary prog-rockers Goblin (SUSPIRIA, DAWN OF THE DEAD) and now transferred from the original camera negative.

Handsome and crafty deep cover agent works his way throught the heroin scene from the bottom up. Packed with action and clever little plot twists all along the way, we are led on a twisty journey throught the labyrinth of international heroin smuggling, from Hong Kong, to Rome. Our devil may care hero leads his gang of herion thugs until they lead HIM to Mr. Big. Or in this case, Mr Low Level Middle Guy, who is at least in control of the Local Roman Dope gangs. Its a cool movie, and satisfied my need for a cops and robbers mood today. Fabio Testi gives a great performance as the undercover police agent who is thick with the bad guys, until its time to make his big move. I'd enjoy this one again some time, just to watch him strut around with belt on over a t shirt. Fashionably 70's costumes and those glorious hairdo's of yesteryear never cease to give me a laugh or three, especially when its a tough guy with feathered hair and a mustache! classic!

Vigilante

The Savage Urban Action Thriller From The Director Of MANIAC

YEAH! This is what happens when you get pushed too far, and can only find peace when you solve it, YOUR WAY. These guys were tired of being hassled, tired of being victimized by the rampant violence that can reach out an change your life on a whim. They decided to send a message back to the bad guys, from the lowest level street pushers and thugs all the way up to the organized leadership, main suppliers and legal professionals who turned a blind eye to what the everyday man was going through. There are some really great lines in this movie and a seriously intense monologue from Fred Williamson proclaiming "This is our Waterloo, baby!". Such a good movie. It makes me want to walk down the street with my shoulders all pushed back and a fierce gleam of pride and security in my eyes. And I weigh like 130. Sometimes we get pushed over that edge. These guys did. And this movie is a wonderful story that tells the why's and wherefor's that did the pushing, and how they chose to react to those circumstances. Im not an advocate of violence in general. But there are always exceptions....Big ups to Blue Underground for this one!

Lucio Fulci does it again in Blue Underground's Special Edition release of The New York Ripper. Lauded as "The most controversial horror film ever made."
It certainly delivers a large measure of the bizzare! From the seedy sex clubs of old New York, to posh penthouse apartments, this killer certainly gets around! It seems someone is going around the big apple slicing up pretty girls! Could it be the 8 fingered Greek? The cops are closing in as this psycho wrecks his vengeance on the women of New York. A brilliant psychologist is enlisted for the task of profiling the killer to narrow it down, and in a ctiy the size of New York, you need it as narrow as possible, right? I mean, no clues, no witnesses, just an inexplicable penchant for talking like a duck. yes. you read that correctly. It seems the killer, for some reason, uses the voice of a duck when making his taunting phone calls to the police. Stranger things have happened though, so they quickly simply dub him "ducky" and get on with trying to figure out who the hell he (wait a minute!) or she is! Why is the killer slicing people up? Whats with the voice of the duck? All these questions and many more are answered in this fantastic psycho-thriler from the dawn of serial killer movies. "the man with two missing fingers" so damn ominous sounding, for some reason, yet for all we know, he lost them fixing a lawn mower. This is a good example of the devices used by Fulci in this film to keep you guessing. I was certainly guessing rrrright up until the end. and I mean RIGHT up to it. I swear , I was all "Of course!" and then literally two seconds later, "what?!?!?" So brilliant. Insane people make for good endingings. and this movie has a doozy!
