STREET LAW

Robbery. Assault. Murder. One Man Has Had Enough!

But when the police drop the case and the suspects remain free, Carlo is pushed beyond his breaking point. Now one man will launch an all-out war against the criminal scum who plague our cities, where justice has its own rules, vengeance needs no badge and the only force that matters is STREET LAW.

"CROWD PLEASING ACTION... Castellari's Direction Lends An Amphetamine-Laced Touch!"
-All Movie Guide

The story of a man who is brutalized in a hold up at a post office, and takes matters into his own hands when the police prove to be less than able to provide him with justice. Franco Nero is really just a fantastic actor. He completely captures the humiliation and rage and it isnt supposed to be pretty, or attractive. Its supposed to look wild, desperate, and just a tad out of control. OK so maybe a whole lot of out of control. But SHIT, whats a regular guy supposed to do? Just keep taking it? Not Franco. No, he goes to the library. Thats right. so Bad Guys WATCH OUT. Because Carlo (the character Franco plays) is hunting for an IN to the world of the criminal. And he plans to follow that lead all the way to the promised land. Of course, we all know that little things often pop up when we try to stick to a plan. Hey! It ain't easy stalking small time hoods through the street, especially when you have about as much street smarts as, well, as much as Carlo has, which isn't much. Carlo is in for a wild ride for sure, but he just HAS to. So he will certainly find a way. You know what I'm talking about.

Great flick, fun and cool. The action is great and the opening montage of various crimes and shenanigans is very eye catching. Once again, the stunts in this vintage classic actually cause me to cringe, as I watch them. Those dudes were tough! Complete with a Bond Girl, to give it a romantic edge, this movie delivered up a solid quality evenings entertainment!

"SHOCKINGLY VIOLENT AND SURREAL... A MASTERPIECE OF THE GOTHIC WESTERN!"
-Spaghetti Cinema

"SO EXTREME IN EVERY WAY - IT IS ONE OF THE HANDFUL OF GREAT ITALIAN WESTERNS!"
-Alex Cox, Director of Repo Man and Sid & Nancy

This one is a first for me. A Metaphysical Spaghetti Western. I like westerns and I enjoy odd things, and this is both! It seems that our bandit "hero" is double crossed along with all the Mexicans by the White guys in the gang. They are all shot at the edge of a mass grave they are forced at gunpoint to dig for themselves. Later a pair of Native Indios out for a stroll or something come upon the wounded(?) and left for dead (again with the (?) as its possible that he IS in fact back from the dead). The Indios nurse the fallen bandit back to health in exchange for the stories of what he saw while on the other side. "It is said there are many animals to hunt there...?" etc etc. Our Hero never gets around to answering these significant questions as he becomes embroiled in the tracking down of the men who left him for dead. Alas. He is to late, the White Guy Bandits, ended up in the wrong town and got strung up by the locals, with two townies stealing the gold for themselves. Our Hero/Anti-Hero does not despair. He simply hangs out until the town itself explodes into violence over the gold. With everything from mystical Indios to a perverted Alderman who keeps his "insane" wife locked up in a room, this movie has more drama and side plots than a bus full of jr high schoolers on the way home from school. It was an interesting movie, and I was surprised by it, to be sure, and I would recommend it to the devout Western fan, as a "Hey you think you've seen em all? Check THIS one out" sort of thing. Cool flick, GREAT surgery scenes, solid gold bullets, and a possible vengeful ghost, it's more a story they might have told IN the old west, than a film ABOUT the old west. very cool, off center, and not what youd expect!

ZOMBIE

Totally Uncut & Uncensored!
In Italy, it was considered the 'unofficial sequel' to DAWN OF THE DEAD. In England, it was known as ZOMBIE FLESH-EATERS and banned as obscene. In America, it was called ZOMBIE and advertised with the depraved tag line "WE ARE GOING TO EAT YOU!" Tisa Farrow (MANHATTAN), Richard Johnson (THE HAUNTING) and Ian McCulloch (CONTAMINATION) star in this worldwide splatter sensation directed by the Maestro Of Gore Lucio Fulci (CONTRABAND, CONQUEST, THE BEYOND) that remains one of the most eye-skewering, skin-ripping, gore-gushingly graphic horror hits of all time!

Now ZOMBIE has been remastered from it's original camera negative. Each flesh-eating frame has been lovingly restored to skull-rotting perfection. This is ZOMBIE like you've truly never seen or heard it before!

I watched this one with a date. We had alot of fun trying to second gues the plot as it moved along- eg "She is going to be the first one to get naked.", and "This guy is going to be the last one to get eaten by the zombies.", and the infamous "This character has my vote as the one who lives." Really I had no idea what to expect from this vintage bit of horror, and have to say that I enjoyed it! For its on sake, and not withstanding that i was on a date. The movie started great with an "abandonded" yacht blowing around adrift in NY harbor or some such (not form NY, so please excuse me if i got that wrong.) The boat is boarded by police and inspected. They, of course, are shocked beyond words to find themselves under attack by someone, who seems rather the worse for wear, and impervious to bullets, to boot!

One of the officers is killed, and ends up in the morgue. (ahem theres a bit of a give away for those of you familiar with the genre) An investigation is launched. The daughter of the owner of the boat shows up and teams up with a cop to find out just what the heck happened and where her pops is. The investigation, fraught with nocturnal creepings aboard the boat, lead our protagonists to a remote island which houses the hospital of a (YES) scientist / doctor. The Doctor explains what his relationship to her father is, and goes on to tell them a bit about the odd circumstances on the island. The daughter, investiogator, and the boat crew (whom they hired to get them to said island) basically spend the rest of the movie trying to not get eaten and to get back to the boat and make good an escape! duh. Obviously, the go through a harrowing chill filled jungle run and eventually...

well, go watch it yourself! I completely dug this movie and cant imganine the need of a barf bag, as is advertised in the trailer. It's a classic work of the Zombie tradition and zombie flick lovers will enjoy it with out a doubt!

"MORE BRUTAL AND BLOODTHIRSTY THAN THE FIRST ONE... Some Of The Most Effective Monsters Ever Put On Film!"
-SciFilm

The remote Spanish town is celebrating the 500th anniversary of the death by auto de fe of the Knights Templar. Its quite a party! fireworks! booze! dancing! whoo hoo! everyones having a blast until, yes, until the EVIL DEAD Templars come rampaging thru the town on a quest for revenge to slake thier never ending quest for blood and mayhem! A small mismatched group of survivors of the initial slaughter end up barricaded in the town church, where amidst the, what you would think is the all consuming problem of how to escape the hell-spawn zombie knights, a bitter love triangle further separates our forlorn heros as they struggle to survive swords wielded by the uncaring dead, and each other!
A legendary film, from a legendary series dubbed "The Blind Dead" this movie is fun for the whole family, if that family happens to all be purveyors of gore and mayhem.
I am working my way with relish through the whoe series, enjoying everyomoment thus far of this milestone of the zombie horror genre. The snazzy box set comes in a coffin! And Trust me, thats quite the conversation piece amog all the guests to my home as it sits proudly atop the dvd rack. Something about the shambling of the knights is extremely disquieting, as oposed to the hell bent for leather fast as hell zombies so common in the films being made today. Shambling sword wielding dead guys, villiage idiots, hunky experts from out of town, and depraved towns women all come together in this vintage masterpiece of horror. enjoy!

Enroute to the camp site, on the train, the lovers have a spat, which causes the young lady to toss her things from the trian and jump off into the country side. The conductor refuses to stop the train to allow her boy to chase her, and so it continues to its destination hwere htey all disembark and begin asking the towns people about the area where she jumped off, so they can go search for her.

No one will tell them of the area, citing bad superstitions, and that no one goes there. EVER.

Meanwhile our train jumping girl has found the ruins of an old monastary where she camps for the night, which somehow awakens the cursed Knights Templar who were buried there, after having been executed for witchcraft hundreds of years ago.
These Templar Zombies seek only what most zombies do, to eat any living flesh around. And so they make a snakc of the girl and dump her corpse in a meadow, where it is seen the next day by the conductor and his son. Once again the conductor refuses to stop, saying they will notify the police at the next stop.

Meanwhile the boyfriend and the deceaseds lady friend are renting horses to make a day trip out to the cursed town to find find her, where they are met by the police who tell of her death. The friends , with the help of a local historian and his smuggler son, set about laying a trap at the site, in order to unravel the mystery. They get more than they bargained for! Fun horror with the interesting Templar twist ( the old order of knights whose downfall gave us the superstition that surrounds friday the 13th) leads us on a merry chase of gore, and the walking dead. what more could you ask for on a Thursday evening?
Truly a classic and benchmark of the genre, this series (yes its a series) is heralded as a masterpiece of the genre. enjoy! and remember to stay completely silent!

This is a great trashy "whodunnit" ! A pregnant fashion model dies on the abortion table, and is replaced in her home so it will appear a natural death. They obviously didn't have to worry about Grissom coming through the scene! Later, Carlo, a photographer with a somewhat randy disposition with regard to the casting couch and just nice looking ladies in general brings in a new prospective model to his agency, where we are introduced to the rest of the cast, all employees of the high end photo agency.

It's a great job for guys and girls alike, until someone begins killing the staff and talent!

Carlo and Magda, his young assistant photographer/lover begin to unravel the mystery together by showing up at a ransom drop that Magda overheard by hiding while the boss was on the phone with the mysterious blackmailer. Oh! The doctor that performed the autopsy was found dead before any of all this happened as well!
Im guessing its a revenge thing. A friend of the abortion bungled victim out avenging her friend. Yes HER friend, I'm still watching this one (as we speak) but im fairly certain the baddie is a woman! I AM REALLY ENJOYING THIS ONE. heh caps lock. but it fits so I will leave it!. Carlo hides out near the ransom drop and snaps photos of the exchange which turns into a MURDER of his boss! In any case, its full of high end fashion models doing all they can to secure that "big chance", perverted industry hangers-on, fur coats, (lets bring back fur coats you guys, even fake ones, or old vintage ones! they are just plain sexy) and stunning shocks and tantalizing clues that have left the police baffled. I highly recommend this one! its fun, campy, and a stimulating mystery. I am soooo hoping Carlo finds the bad guy and gets revenge for the murders of all his friends and co workers! As a photogrpaher, myself, I cant wait to run into an agency run along these lines! GOLLLLY! Fashion and photogrpaphy have come a really long way since the time of this film, but switchblades are apparently time-less!

Keoma

The 'Spaghetti Western' Masterpiece From The Producer Of DJANGO
Franco Nero (DJANGO, THE FIFTH CORD) is KEOMA, a half-breed gunfighter weary of killing as a way of life. But when he returns to his troubled childhood home, Keoma is caught in a savage battle between innocent settlers, sadistic bandits and his vengeful half-brothers. In a wasteland gone mad with rage and pain, can one man massacre his way to redemption?

KEOMA is an extraordinary combination of potent symbolism, powerful performances and relentless violence, brilliantly directed by Enzo G. Castellari (STREET LAW, THE BIG RACKET). Woody Strode (ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST), William Berger (DJANGO STRIKES AGAIN) and Olga Karlatos (ZOMBIE) co-star in this one-of-a-kind classic that fans and critics consider to be one of the greatest 'Spaghetti Westerns' of all time.

Keoma returns home after the end of the Civil War, battered, and weary, to touch the place he was from, in an effort to find himself after the carnage of the war. He finds his town under some sort of quarantine for plague, enforced by a greedy land buyer, who is not allowing any one in or out of town, even to get help or supplies. The sick are taken to an old mine camp, and left to fend for themselves while they sicken and die. It seems that the plan is to wait until everyone ahs died of this illness, then re do the town as he sees fit. He is aided in this by a bevy of ex-confederate soldiers and local gunslingers, three of whom are Keoma's half-brothers. After paying a visit to his father, on the farm, beset with memories, Keoma resolves to free the town from the clutches of the evil ones. madness and gun fights ensue.

OK movie, not my favorite, but not the worst western I've seen either. The elements of the movie that worked for me the best were the quasi spiritual/familial motivations fo the main character. Raised in his fathers home with his three half-brothers, a young halfbreed Indian boy is taught about life and survival by his father, a family slave, and his half-brothers, who simply hated him on sight.

So this poor guy basically goes home to rest after a long war, and begins getting hassled before he's downed his first shot of whiskey in the town saloon. Bound to piss anyone off. But they are family too, dammit! So whats a crackshot half breed commando home from the war to do? Turn the other cheek perhaps? Join forces witht he cabal currently running things? If you said "hell no!" youd be right. Keoma starts by rescuing a pregnant widow, and attempting to get her something to drink. Which leads, oddly enough, to a few dead bodies scattered around the bar. There ARE some really cool shots in the film, one where he and his father are engaged in a bit of nostalgic target practice. The shot is from the INSIDE of a wooden barrel, and the scene comes into view ad bullet holes perforate the wooden slats allowing the camera to show the shooters. The second shot that i realy liked, occured at the onset of a gunfight where Keoma was explaining his offer of 4 cents payment for the medication to the blackmailing gunfighters, "the price of four bullets, you see.". The shot is from Keoma's POV, of his own hand holding four fingers up in the air, lowering a finger as he counts down. One, and a finger comes down, showing one of the gunfighters, who was hidden by the same finger while it was up, Two, same thing, finger comes down, and theres another bad guy right there. Same for three and four. Very well set up shot! I noticed that the costumes in this film were very very raggedy and filthy, as fitting for a down on its heals mining town. Which was nice, as I personally HATE it when you have a bunch of dust blowing round a clap board town and everyone is walking around immaculate with shiny shoes and bright white shirts, like the dirt just doesnt touch them. The old west was DIRTY dammit, and this movie shows that very well.
Its a good movie, just not my fav, is all, but RUN MAN RUN is going to be REALLY hard to beat as my spaghetti western chart topper. Check the www.blue-underground.com
site for all the trailers etc, and I hope you enjoyed this latest review!
thanx!

Contraband

Fabio Testi (REVOLVER) stars as Luca Di Angelo, an idealistic family man and cigarette smuggler in the treacherous Naples underworld. But when a rival gang massacres his brother and abducts his wife, Luca triggers a psychotic mob war that goes far beyond mere revenge.Get ready for a crime saga unlike anything you've ever seen before as director Lucio Fulci (ZOMBIE) unleashes the most gut-splattering, brain-blasting, flesh-frying scenes of cruelty and carnage imaginable. This is CONTRABAND!

Marcel Bozzufi (THE FRENCH CONNECTION) co-stars in this depraved shocker (also known as THE NAPLES CONNECTION and THE SMUGGLER) that most Fulci fans have only seen in censored versions. Blue Underground is now proud to present CONTRABAND fully restored from the original negative for the first time ever in America!

Lucio Fulci's CONTRABAND is a wild ride through the trials of a Naples smuggling ring
run by "Capo's". Things are going splendidly, until a dandified Frenchman moves into the area and begins wasting people in the ring in order to take over the distribution side of their organization for the new product he is bringing in. The dope. Needless to say, this irks our hero and his friends NO END, and they decide to go after the bastard as opposed to accepting his offer to join forces and let bygones be bygones. There are some really cool gore effects in this movie, but hey its a Fulci, so you knew that already. Fabio Testi has become one of my favorite actors, and he does a wonderful job as Luca, one of the Capo's. Things get out of hand for Luca, and at a rather cool twist ending, all the retired capo's (who we never see through out the film, save watching their TV sets) come out for one last show down, with this French upstart. Very cool. The younger generation was all killed, so the old guys put the remotes down and load the shotguns and set a brilliant ambush of the bad guys. Very cool movie, lots of action, some really cool shoot outs, and enough comedy to keep you smiling between the murders and mob killings.

Once again, Ive opted to let my room-mate get his 2 cents in ont hsi movie review, and well, i guess for an english teacher he just isnt very serious, but never the less, here is what he had to say...

Luca, an upstanding Capo and family man, uh, hmm, he, um, fuh, follows the footsteps
of Don Corleone in not wanting to deal in the drug trade. Despite the fact that his wife uh, yeah, gets a little roughed up, he refuses to buckle under pressure. Amidst all this chaos, his hair and shirts and sweater jackets are flawless, for this reason we can say that he made the right decision. Chock full of uh, ah, macabre and campy shootouts, CONTRABAND is a blood and guts melange, well suited for the connoisseur of, uh, of German broads getting their face burnt. Excellent pick.

Thanks BU for another one from the vaults!

OK! In this twisty little number a young girl is bartered by her father to a lascivious temptress in exchange for a night of carnal pleasure. The daughter thinks she is simply going off to visit a wiser lady friend on her remote island hideaway. Thus, she is stoked! WOW! A secret trip to an island paradise! This sure beats the convent school! Thus the stage is set. The sexy temptress shows darling Eugenie around and introduces her step brother, who is also on the island. They begin by having a nice lunch. Some music, some wine, OH did I mention that the wine was drugged? and Eugenie's sweet trusting nature taken advantage of by the step siblings? No? How foolish of me. For it seems that they are members of a bizarre sex-cult that revels in the works of the late Marquis de Sade! (big surprise!) And in fact, the entire trip has been scripted out by our sey blond seductress, down to the last cat o nine tails! HOWEVER, unbeknownst to her, a few script changes have been initiated by the dour cult leader, played by Christopher Lee. These changes leave dead bodies strewn throughout the mansion. What will poor little Eugenie do?

The movie is charming in its way. The decadent jet set, plucking whomsoever strikes thier fancy up and wisking them away to a torturous paradise. Smoldering looks abound with innocent laughter, as secret lsut meets headlong with youthfull innocence. The film has a grainy texture during the hallucinatory "dream" sequences, which actually made me smile (the texture, not the dream) as it served to further cloud the precision of the moment and give it that misty "hazed" look one gets when one has had one too many pulls on the opium pipe. Or so i have been told. In any case, the movie is fun and definetly worth a watch if you are a de Sade fan. yet another cult classic form Blue Underground!
